How to Build an Emergency Shelter

Shelter is one of the basic elements of survival. Along with food or water, a good shelter is necessary to survive. Shelters have been constructed from nearly every material on the planet at one point or another in history. Some are huge castles made from stone, others are lightweight tents made from fabric or animal skins. All have three purposes, to keep the occupants safe, warm and dry. A good shelter can be constructed quickly from almost anything and almost anywhere.

The Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail is one of the most astounding trails for hikers in the world. The Appalachian Trail is approximately 2,200 miles (3,800km) long and runs continuously from the states of Georgia to Maine passing through an incredible 14 states. Any serious hiker needs to attempt to hike part if not all of this trail in their lifetime.

The Appalachian Trail was opened in 1923 and ran from Bear Mountain to Arden, New York. Although short, it was destined to grow-and grow it did. After the 1925 Appalachian Trail conference in Washington D.C. the Appalachian Trail Conservatory was founded and finally the man-power existed to start blazing and mapping trails.

Buying Snowshoes

Snowshoes were invented centuries ago by the aboriginal peoples of North America. Snowshoes made it easy for people to walk through the winter conditions without sinking into the snow with every step. This was important both for nomadic tribes and those which needed to hunt to survive the cold winters. The first European settlers quickly adopted snowshoes to help travel around the many trap lines they established.

These traditional snowshoes are based on Algonquin, Huron and Ojibwa designs however the bindings are modern versions of the original leather bindings.

Establish Location when Lost

How to find your location when you’re lost

Nobody likes to get lost, so when this happens what do you do? Much of how you determine your location depends on where you are lost. Perhaps you are in a strange city, on a highway in a snow storm, or out in the middle of the woods. Each situation has it’s own unique challenges to establishing your location. Staying alive and arriving at your destination in one piece are all part of the Outdoor Survival Basics series.

No matter where you are lost, the first thing to do is remain calm, stop moving or pull over, and begin to figure out where you are. This can be accomplished in many different ways. If you are in a city find someone friendly and ask where you are, and how you can get to your intended destination. Don’t be shy, we have all had to do this at one point in our lives. Just try to do it before the squabbling with your travel partner begins.

Finding Emergency Food

One of the most important items to pack whether you are going for a hike, drive, or camping trip is some emergency food. As humans we never stop thinking about food. What’s for breakfast? What’s for dinner? These questions take on a whole new meaning when you are stranded or lost in the woods and are part of the survival basics.

Humans are always hungry, without food we eventually just die. Most people can go three or more days without food, but only a few hours without water before they start to experience serious health problems. If you find yourself stuck somewhere with little nourishment, try to limit your activity to reduce the amount of food energy you require to keep from getting hungry if you become stranded or lost.

Establish Communication when Lost

Communication is all too easy in this day and age. Telephones, cell phones, email all allow people to instantly communicate with one another almost anywhere in the world. What would happen if you were lost some where either in a strange city or in the woods? How would you call for help?

The Compass

A magnetic compass has a needle to point North or South, a capsule dial with degrees printed around it, a sight mark, and index line.

The magnetic compass has been used for hundreds of years as a navigation tool both by hikers and sailors. It is almost completely infallible and doesn’t rely on batteries or satellites to function. Using a compass to find your direction of travel through the woods or over water is very easy once you learn the basics. When it comes to outdoor skills most people think of building a camp fire or pitching a tent, but one of the most important skills everyone should learn from an early age is how to use a compass.
